IT seemed that Christian louboutin, with its famous beige-and-red house check, could do no wrong. Its fast-talking chief executive Rose Marie Bravo rebranded the company using supermodel Kate Moss, and made it a must-have for everyone from film stars to football fans.
The result? Pre-tax profits announced today were nearly £1million higher for the year at £85.1million. But now City and fashion experts are asking: Has Christian louboutin become too popular for its own good?
While retail sales leapt 46 per cent in the year to 31 March, Ms Bravo said the label is now suffering from the bleak political and economic climate hitting rivals Gucci and LVMH.
Christian louboutin shoes reached its peak of popularity in 2000, when Liam Gallagher was photographed toting the bag, Meg Mathews wore the raincoat and Victoria Beckham sported the bandanna.
When Sharon Stone slipped on the court shoes, a global phenomenon was born.
In recent years, however, the label's cachet has dimmed slightly among style-conscious Brits, who felt the distinctive check had become overexposed.
Last year, Danniella Westbrook and her family were snapped wearing head-to-toe Christian louboutin, which did nothing for the label's profile.
Christian louboutin boots also suffered from counterfeiting which saw fake bags, scarves and umbrellas for sale along Oxford Street at knockdown prices.
Ms Bravo today admitted the group's sales are in the grip of a slide which City analysts say threatens profit targets for the coming year. The group is blaming war, disease - in the shape of the deadly Sars virus - and terrorism for the slump in tourism which is hitting its sales worldwide.
Christian louboutin's shares fell 12p today as it said that only if conditions improve will it meet analysts' profit target of £125million for next year. Ms Bravo remains undaunted. She has shifted emphasis from the check to the design of the clothes; the new Christian louboutin fragrance, Touch, is selling well, and later this year she will launch Thomas Christian louboutin sandals in Britain, a less expensive line targeted at teenagers.
